I don't want to fly as I am a big chicken!! and I don't want the hassle of driving all the way there, so....my question is can you get by with trains and ferries??

Sorry it sounds nuts but I'm not used to this world travel thing....I don't get out much lol.

Thanks in advance.

i had to check your profile to see where you are from.I assume you're from UK, right?

So, here are some useful info, traveling from UK to Greece.(i think you'll find more pages like these on the net, this is just for a start.)

by train

http://www.seat61.com/Greece.htm

by ship

I do agree, with the first user above, that this will take you some time, but if you look at it on the bright side, you are a traveler from the moment you walk through your doorway! And if you choose a trip by sea, then you'll have a good time on the ship, they usually have shops, cafeterias, bars, etc. So, you won't notice how fast the time will flow.

Have a great time!

(and don't worry, your question has been asked many times in the past, in our section, you could use the search bar to find some resolved questions about alternative way of traveling)

First of all ignore the simple minded answers you got here.

Endevide is right and he is showing you the way.

I would tell you my experience. Once over the channel you get the train from Calais to Paris,or Basel. Then from there to Milan and on to Ancona, Bari or Brindisi and possibly Venice too.

From Ancona you board the Ferry to Patras with 2 intermediate stops in Corfu and Igoumenitsa. From Igoumenitsa you can get buses to other destinations but you will have to change buses and from Patras you will get the bus to Athens.

As you can see too much hustle and traveling for a short vacation. Too many changes that you have to carry luggage in and out of stations and ports. It is only re-compensated by the beauty of the trip and he scenery along the way. Worth for one try imho. I did it 3 times and I would have done it again if I had the time.

Look into the European Rail System and you will get an idea of possible intermediate stops/changes.

There are ferry connections to greece from Italy and the links to the websites of ferry operators can be found here: http://www.fromtoinfo.com

You can also get there by train. Just check http://plannerint.b-rail.be/bin//query.exe/en?L=profi&en=++++English for international train timetables.

If you live in mainland Europe or the UK, you can take the train all the way (via the Balkans). Or you can take the train to the heel of Italy and get the ferry from Brindisi to Patras in Greece.

Sure you take a ferry across the channel and the trains across Europe, you will have to make loads of changes though. You can also get cruises around the med but it will take ages.

I have not been to Corfu or Kos, so I can't speak for those islands, but I've been to KEFALONIA, and had a wonderful time. You will love it! Don't forget to go see Agios Gerasimos.
