You're talking about the islands which are in the Aegean sea. there is no legal rule or restriction on building in such a way. It is a matter of tradition and we Greeks are trying to keep our traditions (and perhaps this is one of the reasons that we are behind and outdated on many other matters compared to the rest of the world) it is very important for us to maintain the graphic image of the Aegean islands. Of course if one would like to build a house the way he desires he's able to do so, provided thathe follows the rules and laws of the area where the building is being built: such as floor height, number of floors, how big should the garden be etc, rules that apply to the whole of Greece.

Well, well.First of all, there are 227 islands which are inhabited in Greece. Some of them are protected by laws in matters of preserving a certain architectural style , some are not.As for the white houses on some islands it has to do with sunshine.A darker colour would absorb the heat in summer time . There is a specific island , Santorini where all the houses are white but if you do research or ask the old people ,they will tell you that there were colourful houses there before the 50s.Nowadays we have all come to believe that the "traditional" colour there is white !

There is no law that specifies the colors of the houses..I have seen a pale pink house in Syros with darker pink doors...however if you see the Aegean, and feel the magic of the region, you will notice that a white house with blue window shades compare to nothing.

Sorry propeller, i think u are wrong. You are right in that the white buildings are a matter of tradition on some islands but also in some, it is the law that they can only be white........i.e. HYDRA

That's right, for some islands it is legislation that has to do with the preservance of that certain architectural style.
(not only for the colour, but height, verandas, yards etc.)
