Hi, I want to visit Greece in the month of May. I am interested in visiting Athens and one of the Greek Islands (any island close to Athens would be ideal). I have 3/4 days with me.

I will be flying from London. I am think of flying into Athens, staying there for 1-2 days and then taking a ferry to one of the islands nearby, there I can stay for 1-2 days. Then I can go back to Athens and fly back to London.

This is my tentative plan. Any suggestions on the plan are most welcome.

Also request you to give me info on cheap flight tickets and budget accomodation.

I can drop Athens from my plan if required.

There are three very beautiful islands near to Athens: Ydra, Spetses and Poros. I don't have any more info but I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time there.

Also, I don't suggest dropping Athens. It's the capital and it has places really worthy to visit.

Whatever you decide, have a nice time!!!

Not enough time to go to places like Crete or Sauntering, Rhodes or Corfu. Depends on your interests. Athens is full of antiquities and museums. If you are in to that you will not have time to go far. So you can visit the islands that are close to Athens and are accessible by "flying Dolphins" starting with Egina about 20 minutes Poros about 60 minutes, Hydra at 1 hour 45 min and Spetses at two and a half hours. You could also take the daily three island cruise from Athens to three of the above mentioned islands. As for cheap flights and accommodations check with a travel agent.

I agree that Sanotrini is lovely. So are many of the islands, but I don't think you have long enough. You will waste time getting to/from the airport, having to check in an hour or so before the flight etc etc. or juggling ferry timetables to warrant going anywhere else for just one day.

I spent 4 days just in Athens and thought that was about right to get a good feel for the city, spend a decent amount of time at the Acropolis, in the main museum, wandering around the various other sites etc., as well as having leisurely lunches (as the Greeks do). There is a lot to do and see in Athens. It also has beaches if you do want to spend a day chilling out.

If that doesn't appeal, perhaps go straight to one of the islands such as Kos, Crete, Corfu etc., to which you could get a charter flight, although you may not be able to find anything that enables you to only be away for 4 days.

Unfortunately for you, many of the nicer islands don't have airports and are only accessible by ferry but the timetable and length of the journey will cut the amount of time you get to spend there - and you will have to take your flight schedule into account too. Evia is closest to Athens and very peaceful and lovely, but personally I would concentrate on Athens and return when you can spend longer getting to & spending time on an island of your choice.

Unless you plan to take a plane between Athens and the islands, you don't have enough time for most of them (especially the distant ones, like Santorini, Rhodes, Kos, or Crete). Not to worry; there are some nice islands near Athens, like Ydra (Hydra) and Spetses. You can take a regular ferry (I think it's about a 3 hour trip) or a hydrofoil (The Flying Dolphin - about 1 hour). These aren't the nightlife hotspots, if that's what you're looking for, but they're perfect for strolling along the winding sidestreets and lazying around at the beach.

Take a cruise to the Saronikos islands and you'll get a view of several. You may even stay overnight in one of them and return the next day. They are close to Athens and you will not waste a lot of time traveling to and fro.

I have been to the island of SANTORINI and it is very beautiful. You can take a flight back from Santorini too.
